Set in the Kent of the slight future, the story follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful birder who makes his living writing touching, personal rarity descriptions for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long-distance dip, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced bird news system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each birder. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet "Samantha," a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly knowledgeable about large gull identification. As her list grows, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other, as they embark on a twitch for the Chinese Pond Heron.
After a mysterious stranger joins a couple on a long-distance twitch, they find themselves dealing not with the experienced birder they expected, but a total beginner. While recording everything for posterity, the husband begins to notice odd behaviour in this man that they initially write off to nerves, but, as the hours pass, it becomes evident that the annoying comments like; “What does ‘first-winter’ mean?”, “Caspian Gull isn’t in my book” and “Ooh, look a heron!”, have a much more sinister origin, and this man carries the evil dipping curse.
Frustrated by the gap on his list and multiple dips, Dr. Franklinstein resorts to stealing museum specimens, stitching them together and, on a stormy night, creating a ‘monster’ Franklin’s Gull. Two hundred years after his shocking creation, Dr. Franklinstein's creature, Adam, still wanders the reservoirs of Britain, fooling listers and rarities committees alike.
The film tells the story of brilliant birder Irving Rosenfeld, who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Sprosser, is forced to work for a big-time lister, Richie DiMaso. DiMaso pushes them into importing an American Kestrel so they can add it to their British lists, an idea that's as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, County Bird Recorder, caught between the hoaxers and BBRC. Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn could be the one to pull the thread that brings the cunning plan crashing down.
This original 3D computer animated story follows LEGO, an ordinary, perfectly average birder-figure, who is mistakenly deluded that he's the most extraordinary birder, and the key to saving all lists. He organises a fellowship of weirdos on an epic quest to stop an evil BOU, a journey for which LEGO is hopelessly and hilariously underqualified.
