birds : Just casual records this weekend, with a Marsh Harrier going SW over the house yesterday morning and two Great Northern Divers in Grandes Havres. The Pacific Diver hasn't been seen since 14th January so I would have thought it must have moved on.

.

More exciting was the arrival of my new 'alpha' field guide - the new edition of the Collins guide. I say alpha because, of course, I have plenty of bird books but there has to be one which is your first port of call for any identification problems - your ID-Bible. The evolution of my main European field guide is probably similar to most other birders of my era - Peterson - Heinz Fritter & Parsnip - Jonsson - Collins.

The Good Book

.

And it is certainly a terrific book, with plenty of new maps and plates since the previous edition 10 years or so ago. The number of species has increased, including some 'species' that I didn't know were species - like Maghreb Wheatear, Isabelline Warbler, Iberian Grey Shrike. There does not seem to be a close match between the current BOU 'official' species list which I follow and the species listed in the book. I suppose it is because taxonomy is in such a state of flux at the moment, and different countries class different forms differently, that it has been impossible to keep everyone happy. That's not important for ID purposes though which this book is for. At the moment it is too pristine to take out in the field however!

.

moths : On Friday night there was a further Acleris sp. at the lit window, and both these are not of a familiar form to me. They may still be hastiana but I will have to have a good look at them when I get chance. This genus is so variable, that they could be one of a few species.

last week's Acleris sp.

saw this furry larva out today which I think is Ruby Tiger due to the black head and brown hairs

.

nonsense : I am suddenly a massive fan of extensive injury time after Leeds United's 90+6 minute penalty to equalise against Tottenham in the FA Cup 4th round. Think that its about time we won the cup. I was alive the last time we did it but I still had about 3 months left to gestate. I am worried about the effect it is having on promotion however with both Charlton and Norwich looking good.

.

My football team are not having to worry about over-achieving at the moment and we lost 2-1 on Saturday, and are now in the bottom half of the table. I was quite pleased that I played quite well and was involved in attacking more than usual with some nifty dribbling on the wing and a shot on target that the keeper had to tip over the bar.

.

I may just be a bit paranoid, but why do I always feel like I am being laughed at when I am working in the kitchen?
