birds : Hot weather and hay fever has forced me to mainly take cover in school during my lunch breaks this week. I have had a couple of brief looks in the Talbot for raptors but have only seen the regulars. Swift numbers have built up already and large flocks were feeding there on Tuesday. Best bird was the Hobby low over the house on Sunday morning.

not a bird I know, but a female Emperor Dragonfly laying eggs, Talbot Valley

.

moths : a few photos from the garden on Sunday morning;

.

White Plume Moth - clearly not a moth at all but in fact an actual fairy

.

Olive - only the third for the garden

.

Hoverfly sp.

.

nonsense : World Cup observations - day 17 to 21

.

1. England - Another World Cup, another disappointment. At least no-one was surprised however as England have never beaten any of the top teams during the tournament for years, and they were hardly electrifying in the group stages. The annoying thing is that Germany were there for the taking - they only scored their goals because our defending was so inept. We had too many players who are not international class (e.g. Barry, Upson, Heskey) or were clearly not fully fit (e.g. Rooney, Barry) or are incredibly stupid and arrogant (e.g. Terry). The manager did make some mistakes clearly (mainly stubbornly sticking to 442), but in the end the team did consist of most of our best available players. The basic problem is that World Cup football is all about pass and move, pass and move, and English players simply can't do it. It all stems from junior football across the country where the players that get picked for teams are the big, the strong, the powerful, and many of the more skillful players don't get a look in, get fed up and stop playing before they reach their potential - I've seen it so many times.

.

2. Diego - Very entertaining to watch the craziness that is Diego Maradona. He may not be the master tactician but the Argentina players clearly adore and play for him, and his team go all out attack.

.

"Defence my arse!"

.

3. Phantom - When Frank equalised for England, my living-room dancing was cruelly cut short by the incompetant Uruguayan officials. We couldn't believe it as it was so so obviously a goal. And no matter what people say, it did have an influence on the game - the England players looked like they'd had the wind taken out of them and their ressurgence was halted.

.

Interesting fact : The German team are known as the 'Mannshaft' - I'm saying nothing

.

4. Round of 16 - The stage we got to seems to be have been known as the "Round of 16" - what kind of stupid name is that? I've also heard it called the "last 16" (too informal), the "First knock-out Stage" (too wordy) and the "Eighth-Final" (too mathematical). I'd like to put forward a name that may be too radical for FIFA - the "Second Round" !!! I realise that this is rather 'out-there' but I hope it catches on.

.

5. Viva La Copa Mundial! - I am looking forward to some cracking matches coming up and the tournament is pretty open still with a few teams who can win it. But who do I want to win? My first choice is Paraguay - solely for selfish reasons as I drew them in the staff sweepstake and I fancy the cash! After that, and more realistically, I would like Spain to win - they have never won before and they are a great team and play superb football.

.

Paraguay! Paraguay! Paraguay!
