birds : A quiet week with a splendid second-summer Med Gull on Cobo beach during the school sponsored walk being the highlight. At Foulon Cemetery, I recorded a young Wren begging for food from its parent.

moths : Last weekend I had an amazing four new species for the garden in the trap - two either night. Only one of these I had never seen before - Teleiodes luculella - and this was also a new species for Guernsey.

.

Teleiodes luculella - new for Guernsey.

Inhabits deciduous Oak woodland so who knows where it has come from.

.

Catoptria pinella - only a handful a records for Guernsey

.

Tinea semifulvella - not rare but new for St. Etienne

.

Marasmarcha lunaedactyla - I've seen plenty of these in Guernsey, but never further than 20 yards from its foodplant, Restharrow. There is none near the garden as far as I know

nonsense : World Cup observations - The Final

.

1. The match - I thoroughly enjoyed the final despite there being only the one goal, and because the goal was right near the end it was very exciting. I was cheering for Spain right from the start, and even more so when Holland started kicking pieces out of them. It was good to see Yorkshire being represented in the final with the Howard Webb doing pretty well. The best team won and I was very pleased that it didn't go to penalties.

wearing my Spain shirt for the final, this is me cheering when Iniesta scored (reconstruction)

2. The tournament - I thought that it was a good World Cup but not a great one. The main disappointment for me was the lack of individual flair, with teamwork being the key. I was looking forward to watching Messi and the like but the top players did very little. Even a great team like Spain only managed to score one goal per game in most matches.

.

3. The Media - One of the big differences for me this time round has been the technological changes that have meant that I have had blanket coverage. Since the last World Cup, I can Skyplus any matches, I can watch matches live on broadband, I can get better stats from the internet and I have especially enjoyed listening to the World Cup Podcasts on my iPods from Baddiel & Skinner, Danny Baker and the Football Ramble boys.
